By Charles Rafenstain
This leather bag was a part of a project reconstruction a complete suit of clothing including accessories, with inspiration from a fresco which is depiected in the St. Johann in Dorf Bozen, SouthTirol.
The suit fits perfectly into the timeperiod of Rafenstains life, and there are several clues that points to the facts, it is Sir Rafenstain who is portrait on the fresco. If you look at the leather pouch in the painting you can see its white front which is almost entirely hidden by a black leather front. The construction of the bag resembles the one of the saddlebags just several times smaller. As there are no buckles or other possible means to secure the bag, meaning we had to experiment for the most likely solution
The Reconstruction
For the reconstruction we used a piece of thick black leather. The front of the pouch is a white piece of tanned leather where a buckle and leather strap have been attached. If you open the bag you can see the walls have been sewn in a double layer. Between the layers you can stowen documents of other similar shaped objects, for maximum protection. The bag is wide at tge buttom and gives you the opportunity to have more items in your bag.
When I used the bag I was suprised how comfortable it was to wear and use. It doesn chafe, or bother your movements, and there is room for more things than what you first imagine. It is very recommendable
